Front end design studies
![[Project lifecycle]](graphics/lifecycle.gif)
Different companies have different names for this stage but it is usually carried out on the preferred option from the concept study, prior to detailed design and realisation. We are accustomed to the different names and nuances of deliverables.
We work closely with the European Construction Institute who have found, through research, the impact a good study has on the successful outcome of total project. They recommend the use of the Project Review Index which we have incorporated into our systems to make sure that the key elements which have an impact on the end result are covered at this stage.
In our experience, this is the best stage to:
- freeze the design
- identify cost savings on capital and asset life cycle
- introduce flexibility
- incorporate safety and environmental issues
- address legislatory requirements.
Deliverables may vary according to specific client requirements but would normally include:
- review of plant services
- preliminary specifications and data sheets for key equipment
- general arrangement drawings
- process flow diagrams
- services pipework and utility line drawings
- preliminary services outlet schedules
- basic piping and ducting schematics
- building elevations and plans
- execution programme for the complete project
- a cost estimate for capital sanction, usually ±10%
- a report and presentation material which may include simulations, fly-throughs or models.
