Our approach to health and safety

A major part of our business is risk management, whether technical, commercial, safety or otherwise. The challenge is to adopt a flexible approach that recognises the significance of these risks to our customers’ projects and businesses to minimise their impact. From the outset as part of a chemicals group, we have developed a management philosophy founded on six fundamental principles. These principles form the bedrock of our Roads to Safety and Quality Management:
- understand the scope of work
- ensure competence and resources
- identify hazards and assess risks
- eliminate risks at source
- employ practical solutions
- monitor feedback and review.
Our management systems are policy driven, based on our business strategy, with goals and targets to drive ourselves forwards in meeting customer requirements, through a process of continual improvement. We measure our success through our regular achievement of awards for safety performance and best practice, and the endorsements we receive from satisfied customers.
The importance of managing health and safety
Our clients see health and safety as an area of crucial importance but, in an increasingly competitive market, businesses must maintain a tight focus on deliverables: productivity, products and profits. Therefore, when businesses step out of their normal sphere of operation, e.g. capital projects, they need the high level of competence and reassurance we offer from CEL.
Based upon our wealth of experience, we have developed comprehensive and flexible systems which, not only address the particular problems associated with process safety, construction and CE Marking, but also, the more general health and safety issues of workplace transport and planning, materials handling, ergonomic assessment and job safety analysis.

Our systems for hazard identification, analysis and risk management are best in class, proven in a wide range of industries including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food, consumer goods, chemicals and fibres. From machinery risk assessment through to the management of health and safety for a greenfield facility, our approach tailors itself to the particular needs of each project or can be applied as a set of standalone tools to address specific issues.
Our Road to Safety toolkit includes methodologies for behavioural safety, safety through design and verification, constructability reviews, engineering Codes of Practice and incorporates ECI ACTIVE Value Enhancing Practices.
